Nursing Scholarships
The first AWCMS Nursing
Scholarships were given in 1949,
to Nevada students who had to
go out of state for their nursing
education.

Scholarships are open to students
from Northern Nevada, and the
"Good Neighbor" California
Counties, Nevada, Sierra, Plumas
and Lassen Counties.

"Please note a change in the AWCMS grant application deadline.  Applications must be
postmarked on or before October 15th of the current year.  Applications postmarked after the
October 15th deadline will not be considered."

AWCMS is an all volunteer, membership organization dedicated to improving the health of the
community. Founded in 1947, AWCMS supports nursing scholarships as well as medically oriented
community, university and community college programs, education and the arts. AWCMS-CAF grants
are open to requests that benefit multiple residents of all ages within the community. Nurses’ scholarships
are made available through the AWCMS Endowed Scholarship Funds at Orvis School of Nursing and
the TMCC School of Nursing.

AWCMS grants are awarded to non-profit community agencies. AWCMS does not award grants for
single individuals, salaries or travel, or from agencies supported by government grants. Indirect costs are
not included in its grant awards.

AWCMS grants range from $500 (or less) to $5,000. However, at least one major request is
considered each year. If you are looking to a major project or equipment purchase, please include the full
cost in your application.

A follow-up form is included with each award, to be returned by September 1st of the award year.

Each Grant Application is researched and reviewed by a CAF Committee member, then reviewed by the
CAF Committee. Approved awards are made at the end of March each year. Call the AWCMS
answering machine (775) 829-1303 for more information. Calls are answered as soon as possible.

In 1992, AWCMS created two Endowed Nursing Scholarship Funds with grants from its Annual
Rummage Sale proceeds. The Endowments insure that AWCMS Scholarships will be available at UNR's
Orvis Nursing School and the TMCC School of Nursing in the future.  The Orvis Endowed Fund was
created by a $10,000.00 grant.  The $5,000.00 grant to TMCC was matched by a 2-to-1 Government
Community College Marching Funds Program.  The original $5,000.00 grant created a $15,000.00
Endowment Fund for the TMCC Nursing School.

By September 2007, the Orvis Fund had grown to $77,600.00, producing a total of $3,200.00 in
scholarships for the 2007-2008 scholastic year.  The TMCC Fund had grown to $83,842.27, with a total
of $6,215.00 in scholarships.  A percent of the interest earned by the Endowed Funds is paid out in
scholarships; the balance is invested in growth.    In 2006-2007, the TMCC Endowment gave 8
scholarships: 1 @ $565.00; 2 @ $650.00; and 5 @ $1,000.00.  The Orvis Endowment gave one
$1,000.00 and two $2,200.00 scholarships.  Scholarships are based on grades and financial need.  As
the Funds grow, with reinvested interest, gifts and annual grants, the number of scholarships will increase.
Decisions on the amount of the Scholarships is made by the scholarship committees at the two schools.

As TMCC’s Past President, Dr. Phillip Ringle, said, “Without endowed funds and generous donors like
AWCMS, Nursing Schools would not have survived through the lean years.”  Patsy Ruchala, Dean of
Orvis, said, “We truly appreciate your continued support of our students.  Because of people like you, we
are able to provide our students with the resources necessary to enhance their college experience.”
